"Yoga teaches you how to listen to your body." — Mariel Hemingway

Let's talk about some of the reasons why people don't try yoga or return back to class. Starting a yoga practice can be both exciting and daunting. I understand the unique challenges people often encounter when trying to begin or maintain a consistent yoga routine. Here's some obstacles you or someone you may know may be struggling with and I'll share below how I can help!

10 Common Obstacles People Face When Starting Yoga

  1. Physical Limitations: Age-related stiffness, joint pain, or chronic conditions.
  2. Fear of Injury: Concerns about getting hurt, especially with previous injuries.
  3. Body Image Issues: Feeling self-conscious about your body in a group setting.
  4. Lack of Flexibility: Worrying that yoga requires a high degree of flexibility.
  5. Time Constraints: Balancing a busy life leaves little time for new activities.
  6. Mental Blocks: Self-doubt or the belief that you’re “too old” or "too ___ " (fill in the blank) to start.
  7. Misconceptions About Yoga: Thinking yoga is only for the young or fit.
  8. Intimidation by Studio Environment: Feeling uneasy in a new environment.
  9. Lack of Familiarity with Yoga: Feeling uncertain about where to begin or what to expect.
  10. Lack of Support: Not having encouragement or accountability.

How I Can Help You Overcome These Obstacles

1. Gentle, Accessible Practice:
My yin yoga classes are designed with accessibility in mind. Whether you’re dealing with stiffness, joint pain, or limited mobility, these sessions offer gentle stretches that support your body’s needs. We'll focus on poses that help you ease into movement, no matter your physical condition.

2. Safe and Supportive Environment:
I prioritize your safety by guiding you through poses mindfully and offering modifications to support your body's needs, and prevent injury. The focus is on listening to your body and moving with care.

3. Embrace Your Body:
Our classes foster a non-judgmental, inclusive atmosphere where you can feel comfortable in your own skin. We celebrate all bodies and encourage you to embrace your unique journey.

4. Flexibility Isn’t a Requirement:
In Yin Yoga, it’s not about how flexible you are—it’s about finding stillness and comfort in each pose. This practice is slow-paced, allowing you to deepen your connection with your body.

5. Flexible Scheduling:
I understand how busy life can be, so I'm offering Sunday evening classes to try to accommodate more people's schedules. Sessions are also available online on Thursday evenings (with recordings of each class for 5 days), allowing you to practice from the comfort of your own home at your convenience.

6. Build Confidence and Calm the Mind:
With practice, through gentle stretches and mindful breathing, Yin yoga helps you build confidence, releasing mental blocks and self-doubts.

7. Debunking Yoga Myths:
The beginner series and other beginner-friendly classes are perfect for dispelling the myths about yoga. I guide you every step of the way, proving that yoga is a practice for everybody and every body.

8. Welcoming Studio Environment:
My studio is a warm, inviting space where you can feel at ease. I keep our class sizes small to ensure you receive personal attention and feel supported in your practice.

9. Step-by-Step Guidance:
If you’re new to yoga, it’s normal to feel unsure about where to start. The beginner's series is designed to walk you through the basics, providing clear instructions and a gentle introduction to the practice. We’ll take it one step at a time, making sure you feel confident and comfortable.

10. Community and Encouragement:
You’ll join a community of like-minded souls who are on the same journey as you. We’re here to support each other, offering encouragement and accountability to help you stay consistent.

If you’ve been hesitating to start yoga because of these common obstacles, our Yin Yoga for Beginners series is the perfect place to begin. Let’s work together to help you overcome these challenges and discover the many health benefits of a consistent yoga practice.
