5 Tips to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Josie Knowles | NOV 29, 2025

Recently, I did something I’ve wanted to try for a long time — I signed up for pottery classes. Honestly, the idea of trying something new and stepping out of my comfort zone felt a little scary, and I’ll admit I almost cancelled my first class. I caught myself thinking of possible excuses, convincing myself it wasn’t the right time, or I was too tired, or it was too far to drive in the dark, or that I wouldn’t be good at it…
But something in me — that little soul whisper — said go anyway. So, I pushed myself, and I’m so glad I listened!
Learning something new expands our horizons, opens us to new perspectives, and may even introduce us to people we might never have met otherwise. Stepping into something unfamiliar reminds us just how capable we really are. My pottery isn’t perfect — but it’s rustic and beautifully mine, and I love what I created with my own hands. Sometimes trying new things isn’t just a creative outlet — it’s an act of soul care.
If you’re feeling called to try something new but feel that familiar hesitation, here are a few gentle tips to support you:
1. Start small.
Choose one simple thing that feels slightly uncomfortable — not overwhelming — and take one step toward it.
2. Set a clear intention.
Ask yourself: Why do I want to do this? Will this help me to grow? Let that deeper intention guide you.
3. Expect imperfection.
Release the need to be good at something right away. Imperfect beginnings often become the most meaningful experiences.
4. Bring a friend — or tell someone your plan.
Trying something new feels less intimidating when you’re not doing it alone. Support and connection can turn nervous energy into encouragement and make stepping forward feel lighter and more doable.
5. Celebrate the step you took, not the outcome.
Showing up — even when you almost talked yourself out of it (like me!)— is a win! It’s a reminder that honoring yourself matters more than doing it perfectly.
Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t always easy, but it’s often where the deepest growth and inner nourishment begin. If you’ve been feeling a nudge to try something new — big or small — consider this your gentle reminder that you are more capable, creative, and courageous than you think.
Here’s to new experiences, fresh beginnings, and trusting those soul whispers that guide us forward.
You never know what might unfold when you choose to say yes.
